Today marks 60 years since the cancellation of the Avro Arrow fighter. A guy who runs a history blog in Ottawa tracked down some long-lost 1958 slides of the airplane and a landing gear failure at Malton (now YYZ/Pearson) a few years ago. He found them for sale on Kijiji of all places...

There was a special about the last flying Avro I saw last summer, pretty amazingly complex AND LARGE plane.

I’m too lazy to look myself, but is there a decent book  on what happened, or is it all grassy knoll/Mafia/CIA ordered it stuff?

It’s really quite sad how we lost out on all the technology that our investment developed. My great aunt worked there and she told me about the day they shut it all down. There   were reps from Boeing, Lockheed etc recruiting in the parking lot as everyone left work. De fenbaker tossed all those skilled Canadian people and technology away.

I think it’s a combination of factors, but it ultimately came down to money, and the new PM had different priorities.

Yeah it was almost as fast as the Foxbat, it was a high speed interceptor, rendered obsolete by the ICBM. It wouldn’t have been a great fighter plane.

All were scrapped, but one nose section was saved and is at the Canadian Aviation Museum in Ottawa.

Humanity got the 747, Concorde and Saturn V as the technical talent dispersed . It’s not the happiest ending, but still a lot of good came out of what was learned during that project .

Between it and the C102, one wonders what could have been for Avro.

RCAF posted it on Twitter. I thought I had added a link, but it should be there now.

I wrote about the C102 a couple of years ago. My recollection is that Avro Canada had to decide between the C102 and the CF -100 Canuck. They went with the Clunk. Even when Howard Hughes approached Avro Canada and offered to build it under license they said no. I’ve never quite understood the British and Canadian decisions of that era. They basically ceded the airliner market to America. I guess at the time it was simply cheaper to buy than to produce.
